Would you?

November 26th, 2006 at 04:33 pm

The other day at the grocery store as I grabbed the shopping cart, I noticed a bag left in the cart. It contained 2 greeting cards. I kept them. Not sure if somehow I may have brought bad karma on myself. I wondered if anyone else has found things left behind in a shopping cart and kept them?

Don't pay too much attention to the bad karma because people where I live say the same things about picking up pennies. Some say that there are those that throw them out for bad luck on others. So, I just pick them up and say good luck for me.

No, I have never found anything left in a cart. But I did find a very-thick wallet on a casino floor in Vegas years ago.

I bent down, scooped the wallet up and kept walking....straight to the pit manager where I turned it in without ever opening it.

In this case, I would have done the same...turned them into the store manager.

I know if I lost/forgot something..I would greatly appreciate finding that it was turned in by a kind stranger.

By the way...I do keep the change I find on the ground. Wink

I got an extra bag from the store when I got groceries. It contained scrapbook material and reprints and I knew it had been the lady's in front of me. I took it back to the store and turned it in. I didn't know if she'd ever return to get it, but I was hoping the pictures would help. I would want someone to do that for me.

When ever I find something, I contact the people directly and get it back to them. In the past two years I have found a wallet and 2 credit cards at two different places. A few years back, I found a purse. I use to turn stuff into my restaurant til I found out the manager kept the stuff unless the person came back. I managed to find all the people directly and they come to the house to get their stuff. I keep change I find.

I've found two wallets in movie theatres before. Since I didn't trust simply turning it in to the concession stand (teenagers....you never know) I went through the wallet to try to find personal ID. Yeah, it felt like snooping but I was able to find their name and address from the drivers license. Both parties appreciated the extra effort.
Now on another note, do you offer/expect rewards for finding wallets or purses? One person wanted to give me a couple of dollars for returning his wallet, which I refused. The one time I lost my wallet and someone called me to say he'd found it, when I checked the contents I realized he'd helped himself to $5. Grr.

I keep any space change or money I find on the ground, unless I directly see someone drop it. Then I point it out to them. If I found stuff that someone left behind at the store, I'd turn it into the customer service. I'd want someone to do that for me. The one time I lost my wallet, a guy called and told me he had it. I went to the store where I had lost it and he was waitng for me. Everything as still there, even all the cash. This was just a regular guy who happend to find it. I was so grateful. About 2 years ago, I was shopping on Black Friday. I went to the ladies room and someone had left their wallet in the stall on top of the tp dispenser. I'm nosey, I looked. It was stuffed full of $20 bills and $50 bills. Must have been at least a grand in there. At the time I was in way more debt than I am now, and was only making about $15 grand a year. That $1,000 would have paid my rent, bought groceries for me, and paid a few bills...not to mention help w/my xmas shopping. But I knew I would be heartbroken if someone stiole that money from me. So I took it to the front counter (I was in a Starbucks) and told the woman I had found it and it had a large amount of cash in it. She took it to the safe and locked it up. About 20 minutes later, a woman came in frantic b/c she ad lost her wallet. The one I found was hers. I felt so good that I had been honest when I saw how upset she was.

As for Karma....well, Karma's a bitch. And yes, I think it will cme back to bite you.
